Training
We desire to grow in our understanding of and ability to communicate how the Kingdom of God is working around us so we can operate in tune with it.
Training Objectives
The Vitality Project is committed to teaching about revival and training effective urban ministry practitioners in a variety of ways.
- Living System Ministry. Dr. Hall, president of EGC, and his wife, Judy Hall, will soon publish, The Cat and the Toaster: Living System Ministry in a Technological Age. This book articulates the basic principles of what The Hall's and EGC have learned about urban ministry in the past 40 years. Core concepts developed in the book include:
- Primary/Secondary Culture Theory
- Basic Systems Thinking with a biblical perspective
- The Church as an organic, living system
- Why Works doesn't work and why you should expect to be counterproductive
- The Redemptive Method
- Living System Ministry
Together, these concepts form the foundation for the development of an approach to ministry called Living System Ministry. EGC and the Hall's will also be developing appropriate tools for effective teaching and consulting that can be used in a variety of venues.
- Inner City Ministry Class. Dr. Hall and his wife Judy continue to teach and guide the development of the Inner City Ministry Class they pioneered as an antecedent to Gordon-Conwell's urban extension, the Center for Urban Ministerial Education (CUME). In time, the course was adopted as a part of CUME's core curriculum. Over the last 30 years, hundreds of ministry practitioners from various ethnic, denominational, and ministry backgrounds have taken the two-semester course, and many testify that it has been transformational to their lives and ministries. The final "product" of the course is for each student to write a major ministry proposal consisting of four parts: a community analysis, a church or organizational analysis, an analysis of two relevant ministry models, and a synthesis of the student's ministry plan. Many of the past ministry proposal projects written in the Inner City Ministry class are thriving ministries today.
- Doctor of Ministry Program. Dr. Hall and his wife Judy have taught and mentored five cohorts of Gordon Conwell's "Ministry in Complex Urban Systems" track of the Doctor of Ministry Program at the Center for Urban Ministerial Education. This practitioner degree program enables leaders to develop a continual learning process, and increase their skills and effectiveness in their area of specialization.
- PhD Program. The Vitality Project is currently engaged in the collaborative development of a practitioner oriented PhD program through an emerging partnership with the Oxford Centre for Mission Studies in Oxford, England. The PhD program would provide a cohort based, research intensive degree program for existing urban ministry practitioners to understand and articulate effective urban ministry practices.
- Elijah Schools, started in January of 2008 by Dr. Kim and named after the prophet Elijah whose ministry was "to make ready a people prepared for the Lord", train pastors and leaders to lead their congregations in repentant prayer that leads to spiritual renewal and revival. Elijah Schools have been held in cities across the United States including: Pittsburg, Washington, D.C.; New York; New Jersey; Colorado; and California.
- Dr. Kim's speaking engagements and writing projects have provided an opportunity for additional teaching and training with regard to revival, renewal, and awakening at major conferences across the United States, Korea, and the Middle East. Dr. Kim has recently completed a Korean version book on the Restoration of Israel and is also researching and writing for a book on the history of revival in the world.
