A highlight of key resources which we believe would be helpful to anyone who wants to minister in the city, especially Boston. The information here comes from interviews with pastors, our research and our own experience of over 60 years serving Boston's urban church.

Books and Church Supplies

Theological Libraries

Congregational Library and Archive: an extensive collection of contemporary and classic religious studies material, ranging from theology and preaching to education and the social sciences as they affect religion. Also includes an archive of local church histories. Publishes a Bulletin thrice annually. Services and borrowing are free, although there is a small fee for borrowing by mail.

Online Resources

Christianity.com: a network of ministries, churches, and organizations that use the site's web site-building tools to share their messages.It offers articles, information and news on spiritual life, Bible resources, health, education, youth, family, and legal resources.  It provides services such as e-mail, chatting, maps, Bible tools, and links to Christian Broadcasting Network, Prison Fellowship, and Salvation Army USA.

Gospel Communications Network: an alliance of Christian organizations dedicated to spreading the Gospel over the Internet's World Wide Web'contact via e-mail at info@gospelcom.net, phone at 800-253-0413 or 231-773-3361, by fax at 231-777-1847, or by mail at Gospel Films, Inc., PO Box 455; Muskegon, MI 49443-0455';contains an info browser by audience, content, or services. Offers Mission Network News, Bible Gateway (searchable online Bible in multiple languages and translations), and free services in Devotionals, Guidance- Life Answers, How to Know God, and Webmaster tools.

Christian Classics Ethereal Library: One of the most complete online collections of Christian literature ' in full text form and MP3 audio files. These books are all books in the public domain. Also contains the World Wide Study Bible at www.ccel.org/wwsb and a Christian Encyclopedia drawing on many component resource works.

Baker's Guide to Christian Distance Education: Provides information and links to K-12, undergraduate, and graduate degree programs available online for non-residential study.

Christian Camping International's Guide to Christian Camps: Provides online specialized searches and links to Christian Camps & Retreat Centers. You can search by state and other criteria.

National Pastors Prayer Network: This prayer network isn't just for pastors. The e-mail newsletter has lots of information of how God is working in response to prayer around the US and around the world. The Network and newsletter encompass a wide range of evangelical Christian groups. They provide timely and encouraging news on networks and prayer groups in many cities. To subscribe, click here.

Theological Research Exchange Network (TREN): Access to Christian conference papers & theses. TREN collects and makes available (for a modest cost) over 7,800 theological, Biblical and Christian resources, most in the form of conference papers, theses (Masters, D. Min, & Doctoral), and journal articles. About 2,600 papers can be ordered and downloaded electronically.

Bible Study Software

  • Gramcord Institute: Gramcord for Windows is one of the best Bible research programs for grammatical and word studies of the Greek and Hebrew original language texts.
  • Hermeneutika BibleWorks 6: Also designed to do Bible research using the original languages. Many English and foreign language Bibles are included in the program.
  • Logos Bible Software Series X: Provides modules to automate research and to integrate electronic books into a single digital library for easier access and searching. Various library bundles include Bible study tools and Christian books.
  • Online Bible: Inexpensive (or free download) Bible study software with many public domain additions and Bible versions added over the years.

Grants

Associated Grant Makers: The best place to begin searching for grants. Their library is free and open to the public. It maintains an extensive collection of publications which focus on local and national grantmaking, fundraising, and nonprofit management.

The AGM Partners Program provides, for a modest fee, a quarterly newsletter highlighting current philanthropic trends, invitations to AGM's Annual Meeting, discounts on AGM programs and publications, including the Massachusetts Grantmakers Directory, 24-hour access to the online directory, and various skill building and informational seminars. Directory updates are available for a higher fee.

Library hours: Monday-Friday 10-4:30, Tues. and Thurs. till 6pm. Please note, first-time users must attend a one-hour orientation, scheduled at least 24 hours in advance, Monday's at 2:30 or Wednesday's at 10:30.

Leadership Resources and Connections for Christian Pastors

Black Ministerial Alliance of Greater Boston: An association of clergy, gathering for mutual clergy support with an emphasis on programs. there are committees for education, housing, economic development, criminal justice, spiritual life, and other community issues. Has an after-school program (Victory Generation) that providess help in inter-church communication, unity and strength in the community. contact Dawn Swan at (617) 445-2737 ext. 11.

Dr. Dudley offers helpful resources, practical exercises and tested and reshaped tools to highlight and affirm the internal strengths and gifts of small churches. Based on his workshop experiences with pastors, members and denominational leaders representing over 1000 small churches.

Christian Leadership World: Helpful Bible studies and articles on Christian leadership; for example, on developing a church vision and implementing it.

Vision New England: An interdependent network of individual Christians and local churches committed to reaching New England through healthy churches. Features more than 30 ministry initiatives and hosts annual Congress convention in Boston.

Sermon and Preaching Resources

Sermon Central: Website with resources for sermon preparation including 30,000 sermons searchable by Scripture text, topic, keyword, denomination, and contributor. Also contains sermon illustrations which can be accessed by topic and type with links to context. Sermon outlines are also searchable. Largest and most popular sermon website. (Don't forget to give credit, whether speaking or writing, to any quotations or ideas used from others.)

Sermon resources of Specific People: Ray Stedman Archives, author and pastor of Peninsula Bible Church, has the texts of a very extensive collection of biblical sermons covering over 30 years on this website.

Spurgeon's Sermons Online ' at the Spurgeon Archive: Spurgeon was one of the greatest 19th century preachers. The full text of many, though not all of Spurgeon's sermons are indexed by Scripture text, title and by date.

John Piper's Sermons: Notes and sermons by this author and Minnesota pastor.

Seminaries

Seminaries can serve as a general resource for prayer services, lectures, continuing education and networking, as well as a source for student interns.
